Tomorrow: Sustainable Technology for Spaceship Earth

“Mind” is the emergent property of this tightly circuited mass of neurons. A evolving property that has us in early adolescence as a species. Ignorant, self-centered, risky if not insane in behavior. Nowhere is our immaturity more obvious – to us more evolved souls, of course – and dangerous than in the very way we live (reproduce, eat, consume, etc.) Earth’s six-largest mass extinction is now underway, right before our post-troglodytic eyes. Yet we likely have all the knowledge and technology to maintain present consumption lifestyles in a biologically sustainable manner. Thursday, I would like to explore the extent of the environmental problems, the technology, design and policy solutions; and whether our political, economic and cultural systems are flexible enough to allow for the necessary changes. Are we, as a species, mature enough?
